A new operating permit for Turkey Point will give the state Department of Environmental Protection sole management authority. “We moved from an agency that has a governing board and a public process to an agency that does things behind closed doors,” said Julie Dick, an attorney for the Everglades Law Center (see Herald article below). Local government and environmentalists are raising concerns about the impact on fresh water in the Miami area and the Everglades. This comes at a time when expansion of the plant has caused a need to reduce salinity in the cooling canals. Salinity could be reduced by bringing in more fresh water, but this would not address the root problem.
