On Tuesday, September 12, the Urban Environment League lost more than a friend – we lost a giant who revived  the life of our city and caused historic neighborhoods wake up and smile.  Tony Goldman blessed us with his extraordinary vision, energy and leadership as he performed magic throughout this country – New York, Philadelphia, Mississippi, and of years of service as a Trustee with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. How fortunate for Miami- Dade County when Tony turned the corner to Ocean Drive and discovered the Art Deco District in Miami Beach, then continued  the Wynwood warehouse district, Flagler Street and the Performing Arts Center neighborhood.

Tony dedicated himself to the miracle of transforming  downtrodden neighborhoods into magical cultural destinations. He was holistic in his approach to each challenge.  He was a rare developer.  He studied a long-term concept of what would revitalize the neighborhood.  The lovely bones of antiquated buildings were his passion, so he developed themes, guidelines, designs and even tourist amenities as part of a brilliant mandate for each special collection. Then he invested in his dreams to jump start the vision.
